Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is a common condition experienced by many women,
especially adolescent girls. Globally, more than 50% of women experience
dysmenorrhea, with the prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea in Indonesia
reaching approximately 54.89%. The pain experienced can be very intense,
disrupting daily activities in up to 50% of women of reproductive age and as
much as 85% in adolescent girls. Dysmenorrhea treatment can be conducted
through pharmacological or non-pharmacological therapies. Based on an
assessment at PMB Hilda Handayani, an adolescent girl, referred to as "H," aged
20 and residing in Pongporang, Bandung Regency, West Java, was found to be in
her second day of menstruation, experiencing severe lower abdominal pain that
disrupted her activities. Examination results indicated that "H" was experiencing
primary dysmenorrhea. A literature review from sources such as PubMed, Google
Scholar, Scopus, Google Cendekia, Science Direct, and WorldCat shows that dark
chocolate interventions have an impact in reducing the intensity of pain in primary
dysmenorrhea. From the analysis of five reviewed journals, dark chocolate has
proven effective in decreasing pain intensity in primary dysmenorrhea. Thus, the
administration of dark chocolate can be applied as an alternative method to relieve
pain in primary dysmenorrhea.
