Abstract

WHO reports 13.7 million stroke cases/year with a 5.5 million mortality rate. In the world, the percentage of strokes is 70%, stroke mortality with 87%, and 23% disability. People with stroke disabilities are mostly encountered in developing countries. The stroke prevalence in Indonesia is 10.9%, or 2.120.362 people of more than 15 years old (Kemenkes RI, 2018). The outcome of stroke treatment is influenced by the rapid response time of health workers to reduce the morbidity and mortality of stroke patients (Verawati et al., 2017). The influence factors of stroke severity are the causality, other diseases, diagnosis, and prompt treatment (M. N. Putri et al., 2017). The study aimed to determine the relationship between response time and stroke severity in the emergency department of Dr Moewardi Hospital Surakarta. The type of research adopted a quantitative cross-sectional. Forty-two (42) respondents were selected through a consecutive sampling technique. The data analysis used the Spearman test. The Univariate analysis of the response time obtained 20 respondents (47.6%) with rapid response time, fast with 17 respondents (40.5%), and slow with five (5) respondents (11.9%). The initial assessment of stroke severity showed a minor category with two (2) respondents (4.8%), moderate category with 17 respondents (40.5%), and severe category with 23 respondents (54.8%). The results of the bivariate analysis revealed the value of sig. (2-tailed) 0.000. The correlation direction was indicated by a correlation coefficient of -0.724, where the direction of the correlation was negative with a non-unidirectional relationship. The correlation coefficient value presented a strong relationship. The study concludes that there is a relationship between response time and stroke severity in the Emergency Department of RSUD Dr Moewardi Surakarta.
