Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease caused by limited airflow due to blockage of the airways and/or damage to the alveoli. A nursing problem that often arises in COPD sufferers is ineffective breathing patterns, which result in respiratory problems. The aim of this case study is to determine the description of nursing care for COPD patients in meeting oxygenation needs. This type of research is descriptive, using a case study approach method. The subject in this case study is a male patient with COPD, aged 49 years, in the emergency room at PKU Muhammadiyah Karanganyar Hospital. The results of the case study show that the management of nursing care for COPD patients in fulfilling oxygenation needs with the nursing intervention of slow deep breathing exercises for 1x3 hours resulted in an increase in respiratory frequency from 26 x/minute to 22 x/minute, and oxygen saturation improved from 94% to 98%. Recommendations for slow deep breathing exercises that can be applied to COPD patients include increased oxygen saturation and improved breathing frequency, which can relieve symptoms of fatigue. This technique is an independent breathing technique to increase lung ventilation and oxygen perfusion to peripheral tissues.
